Expert Statement – American Heart Association Recommend ‘Sit Less, Move More’
The American Heart Association has released an expert statement on sedentary behaviour (sitting) and health in adults. The report published in August 2016, was compiled by a comprehensive group of leading sedentary behaviour scientists (conflicts of interest declared).
A key finding of the report was that evidence is accumulating that prolonged sitting could be a risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, and a shorter life span, even if an individual also takes part in regular physical activity. The report authors therefore suggested:
Given the current state of the science on sedentary behavior and in the absence of sufficient data to recommend quantitative guidelines, it is appropriate to promote the advisory, “Sit less, move more.”
